Do Product Directories Build Domain Rating? Our Case Study: DR 0 to 39 in 15 Days

By the LaunchStall team · Updated Oct 19, 2026

"Do product directories actually help SEO?" is one of the most common questions makers ask. Instead of theory, here is what happened to our own site.

LaunchStall went live on October 4, 2026 as a brand-new domain with no backlinks. At the end of our first week, Ahrefs still showed a Domain Rating (DR) of 0. By October 15 it read DR 34, and by October 19 — fifteen days after launch — DR 39. Almost all of the links behind that came from product directories and launch platforms.

What we actually did

We submitted LaunchStall to product directories, launch platforms and AI-tool lists, one by one, over those two weeks:

  • About 70 listings were live by the time we hit DR 34.
  • About 105 listings were live at DR 39.
  • Many of these sites list new products in exchange for a badge or a link back — the same model LaunchStall uses for free launches.

We showed every badge we earned in a "Featured on" strip on our homepage, so each directory could verify its link and visitors could see the social proof.

No paid links, no link networks, no guest-post swaps.

Why directory links move Domain Rating

Domain Rating is Ahrefs' estimate of the strength of a site's backlink profile, on a logarithmic 0–100 scale. Two things drive it:

  1. How many different websites link to you (referring domains, not total links).
  2. How strong those websites are themselves.

A new site starts at zero because no other domain links to it yet. Each directory that lists you is a new referring domain — and many established directories have solid DR of their own. That's why the first few dozen listings can move a new site's DR quickly. (Our guide on how to increase Domain Rating explains the metric in more detail.)

What we noticed along the way

  • DR lags reality. Ahrefs needs to crawl each linking page before it counts. We had dozens of listings live for days while DR still showed 0 — then it jumped.
  • Early listings matter most. Because the scale is logarithmic, going from 0 to 30 is far easier than going from 30 to 40. Our gains slowed after DR 34 even though we kept adding listings.
  • Followed links count most. Directories that link with a normal (followed) link pass the most value; nofollow links still bring visitors and discovery.
  • Some directories add little. Listings on tiny or inactive sites barely moved anything. Active, crawled directories made the difference.

What a higher DR does — and doesn't — do

A higher DR made LaunchStall look more established, helped new pages get crawled and indexed faster, and gives our own makers' product pages more weight.

But be clear-eyed:

  • DR is not a Google ranking factor. It's a third-party estimate. Rankings still depend on content, relevance and real user interest.
  • DR doesn't bring traffic by itself. Directory listings sent us some visitors, but most growth still comes from people who actually want the product.
  • It's a foundation, not a strategy. Directories get a new site off zero; useful content and real mentions take it further.

How to replicate this for your product

  1. Make your homepage ready first — clear headline, real screenshots, a working signup.
  2. Prepare a launch kit (name, tagline, short and long description, logo, screenshots) so each submission takes minutes. Our directory submission guide has a checklist.
  3. Prioritise active directories in your niche that give a followed link or a free listing in exchange for a badge.
  4. Show your badges in a "Featured on" section on your homepage — visible to visitors, not hidden away.
  5. Track it monthly, not daily. DR updates in jumps as crawlers catch up.
  6. Keep going with content — one genuinely useful article per month compounds on top of the links you've earned.

The bottom line

Product directories won't make a business on their own, but for a brand-new domain they are one of the fastest honest ways to go from DR 0 to a respectable number. We did it in about two weeks.

You can start with us: launch on LaunchStall — free with our badge on your site, and every live launch gets a permanent product page with a followed backlink. You can also follow our own number on the Domain Rating page.

Frequently asked questions

Do product directories help SEO?

For a new website, yes. Each directory that lists you is a new referring domain, which helps search engines discover and trust the site and raises third-party authority metrics like Domain Rating. They work best as a foundation alongside useful content.

How fast can directory listings raise Domain Rating?

In our case, about 70 listings took a brand-new domain from DR 0 to DR 34 in roughly 11 days, and about 105 listings reached DR 39 in 15 days. Results depend on the directories’ own strength and how quickly Ahrefs crawls them.

Are nofollow directory links worthless?

No. They don’t pass as much authority as followed links, but they still bring visitors, discovery and brand mentions. A natural link profile includes both.
