What is domain age?
Domain age is how long a domain name has been registered, counted from its registration date. A domain registered in 2010 is over a decade old even if the website on it launched last year.
The registry keeps a public record for each domain with its registration date, expiry date, registrar, status and nameservers. This tool reads that record and does the date maths for you.
Why check a domain’s age?
- Buying a domain: a long registration history can mean a long link history, good or bad. It is worth checking before you pay for an aged domain.
- Sizing up competitors: see how long a rival has been around and how established their domain really is.
- Avoiding a lapse: keep an eye on the expiry date of your own domains, or of one you are hoping to pick up when it drops.
- Spotting new sites: a domain registered only days ago behind a site that claims a long history is a red flag.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check how old a domain is?
Enter the domain in the box above. We read its public registration record from the registry (RDAP, or WHOIS for the few extensions that have no RDAP service) and work out the age from the registration date.
When was the domain purchased?
The registration date is when the domain was first registered. It does not change when the domain is renewed, and it usually does not change when the domain is sold or transferred, so it is not always the day the current owner bought it.
Is domain age a Google ranking factor?
Not directly. Google has said that the age of a domain on its own is not a ranking factor. Older domains do tend to have had longer to earn links and trust, which is why age is still a useful clue when you are buying a domain or sizing up a competitor.
How do I find out when a domain expires?
The result shows the registry’s expiry date and how many days are left. After a domain expires, most registrars allow a short grace period to renew it before it is released for anyone to register.
Why is some information missing for my domain?
Some country-code registries do not publish creation or expiry dates publicly, and privacy rules hide personal details for most domains. We only show what the registry itself publishes.
Does it show who owns the domain?
No. Registries hide owner details for most domains, and we do not show them. You get the registrar, dates, status and nameservers.
Which domain extensions does it support?
Most of them, including .com, .net, .org, .io, .co, .uk, .in and hundreds more. A few registries do not offer a public lookup, and for those we will tell you so.
