How we estimate a domain’s value
There is no single official price for a domain. Appraisal tools estimate it from the same things buyers look at, and so do we. The estimate starts from the length of the name, then adjusts for:
- Words: a real dictionary word or a clean two-word phrase is worth far more than a random string of letters.
- Extension: .com carries a premium. Other extensions are priced as a share of the same name on .com.
- Hyphens and numbers: both make a name harder to say and share, which lowers its value.
- Industry keywords: names containing words from high-spend industries attract more buyers.
- Age: read from the public registry record, since a longer history adds a little trust.
What this estimate does not include
The estimate values the name, not the business behind it. Traffic, revenue, backlinks, brand recognition and trademark rights can all change what a buyer will pay, and none of them are counted here. Treat the figure as a sanity check, and the range as the realistic space for negotiation.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out what my domain is worth?
Enter the domain in the box above. We estimate its resale value from the name itself (how long it is, whether it is made of real words, whether it has hyphens or numbers), the demand for its extension, and how long it has been registered.
How accurate is the estimate?
It is a starting point, not an appraisal. Automated estimates are good at telling a strong name from a weak one and at placing it in the right price bracket, but the real price is whatever a buyer agrees to pay. That is why we show a range rather than a single number.
What makes a domain name valuable?
Short, memorable names made of real words on a .com extension are worth the most. Names in industries with big advertising budgets, such as finance, insurance and travel, are worth more still. Hyphens, numbers and hard-to-pronounce spellings lower the price.
Does traffic or a website increase a domain’s value?
Yes. A domain with real visitors, revenue or backlinks is worth more than the same name unused. This tool values the name and its age only, so a domain with an established website can be worth more than the estimate shown.
Does domain age affect its value?
A little. An older registration usually means a longer history and more trust, so age adds a modest bonus to the estimate. It matters much less than the name itself.
Why are some extensions valued so much lower than .com?
Resale demand is concentrated in .com, with a smaller market for extensions such as .net, .org, .io and .ai. Most newer extensions trade for a fraction of the same name on .com, and the estimate reflects that.
Can I use this to sell or buy a domain?
Use it as a quick reality check before you list or make an offer. For a high-value name, compare it with recent sales of similar domains and consider a professional appraisal.
